DBM Notes

Bruce Meyer, DBM Rules Coordinator for NASAMW

Welcome,  I would like to present a number of things including the list of tournaments and their formats for the three HMGS East conventions, scoring, rules clarifications, army list interpretations, the NICT, the difference between a NASAMW sponsored and a NASAMW sanctioned tournament, and the Gulf Coast Championship.

NASAMW will start using the new DBM 3.1 Amendments for tournaments starting after Historicon 2005.

The following table lists the formats for the DBM tournaments to be run by NASAMW at the three HMGS East Conventions.

The actual schedule for each convention will be published in Spearpoint, on the NASAMW web site, and in the HMGS East PEL for that convention.

Scoring System

After much consideration, the 15-0 scoring system will be used for all convention tournaments.  This scoring system is based on the 10-0 system but gives double points for enemy commands broken.  For example: a player wins 8-2 by breaking 3 enemy commands (but not the C in C’s) and not having any of his own commands broken.  This translates into an 11-2 win.  The intent of 15-0 scoring is to reward aggressive play at the expense of draws.

Current Rules Version

It is anticipated that DBM 3.1 will be released in March of 2005.  NASAMW practice is to institute rule updates after our year end.  The NASAMW year ends with Historicon.  Version 3.0 will be effect for convention play through Historicon.  3.1 will be used after the convention.

To encourage 3.1 play, both Glicko ratings and NICT qualification will recognize any local tournaments that opt to use 3.1 prior to the NASAMW adoption.

Rules Clarifications

The BHGS rules clarifications for DBM v3.1 will be used at these conventions tournaments. They are available at the BHGS web site http://www.bhgs.co.uk/RuleClarifications/DBMclars/iwf_clar/IWF_Clarifications.htm, or here as a Word .doc. The Guidelines for Fair Play included in the BHGS rules clarifications will be used. Umpires at other NASAMW tournaments are encouraged to use these clarifications as well. This is good practice for uniformity and preparation for competitive play.

Army List Clarifications

The BHGS army list interpretations will also be used at these convention tournaments. They are also available from the BHGS web site. I would ask that umpires for other NASAMW tournaments do likewise.

NICT 2006

This 15mm NICT at Historicon will again be 6x 4 hour rounds with 3 rounds on Friday and 3 rounds on Saturday.  The NICT is still an invitational tournament and competitors must be NASAMW members to participate.  Invitations are extended to those players who qualify, a player designated by a NASAMW Regional Representative as representing that region, foreign players who live abroad, and others at the discretion of the DBM Rules Coordinator.

Qualifying for the NICT

A NASAMW sponsored tournament is one where NASAMW provides prizes and/or other material support. Typically either a NASAMW officer or Regional Representative is on hand to either run or help run the event.

A NASAMW sanctioned event is one that has at least six NASAMW members in it but does not have active sponsorship by a NASAMW office or Regional Representative.

Each complete multiple of six participants in a tournament permits one competitor to qualify for the NICT.  If the highest finishing players are already qualified, the qualification DOES NOT move down to a lower finishing player - instead the tournament produces fewer than the maximum number of qualifiers.

Each Regional Coordinator may hold a regional championship for each rules set for which NASAMW sponsors a NICT. The winner of this regional championship shall qualify for the NICT of that rules set, regardless of the number of players participating in the championship.

Each Regional Coordinator shall be able to invite a single member from his/her region to participate in one NICT each year. The Coordinator must inform the ChUmp who this invitee is one month before the date of the NICT.
Non-members from other nations may participate in the NICT on a space available basis

Gulf Coast South and the NICT

The Gulf Coast DBM Championship tournament a series of 13 tournaments and is won by the player with the highest score at the end of the circuit.  More information about the Gulf Coast DBM Championship is on the NASAMW web site.

The normal NASAMW qualifying rules apply to all tournaments on the Gulf Coast Championship tournament circuit so if there were at least 6 competitors attending one of those tournaments then at least some will have qualified.

In addition, invitations will be extended to the top 5 finishers in the Gulf Coast Championship who have not already qualified for the NICT. If they are not already NASAMW members then they will have to join NASAMW in order to play in the NICT.

25mm DBM Open and NICT at Historicon

If there are not enough 25mm qualifiers for the 25mm NICT  NASAMW will combine the 25mm Open and the 25mm NICT.
