The St. Lawrence Seaway International Championship

Updated October 16, 2005

We had a very fine first year with attendance way up all around this region. Let's see if we can keep the enthusiasm up!  Remember that the purpose of this championship is to have fun, promote the hobby of historical miniatures wargaming, and to hand out an additional annual award :-).

There is no cost or fee to participate (beyond the cost of the individual tournaments). In fact, players need only come and play at a few tournaments each year. For tournament organizers there will be little extra work, only sending their results into Jeff Zorn to do the tabulations and computations. Results will be published annually in NASAMW’s Spearpoint and on the NASAMW web site as results flow in.

SLSIC Bylaws and Format  (Note, this is not graven in stone. It is a working model for this year. After a little experience adjustments will be made for the following year):

1. Board of Directors: Currently this is just Jeff Zorn. As more individuals in the Ontario-New York region get interested in this series we will decide how to expand the leadership and divide the work.

2. Sponsorship and Sanctioning: the SLSIC is both Sponsored and Sanctioned by NASAMW.

3. New Tournaments: A new tournament may be added to the schedule by their organizer contacting me with the details about the event. They must adhere to the guidelines posted here.

4. Tournament Format: Tournaments can be any AP value between 200-400 AP. Tournaments may be Open or Theme events. Tournaments will be singles competitions (i.e. not doubles/partners).

5. Umpires: Each tournament shall have a ref/umpire. Refs are encouraged to play, especially if it makes for an even number of players. Any rules questions that arise in the ref’s games will be decided by another knowledgeable player agreed upon before the event begins, but not one of the ref’s regular gaming pals. Refs are encouraged to download and use the BHGS clarifications as these are becoming something of an international standard. Go to http://www.bhgs.co.uk/ and follow the Rules link

6. Scoring:  Individual events can use whatever scoring they prefer (10:0, 32:0, 15:0) , but for purposes of tracking the championship we will also keep track of 10:0.  The NASAMW site has information on the BHGS system.

7. Determination of Winner: The winner of the SLSIC will be the individual with the highest average score (computed to the first decimal point, e.g. 9.7), with ties going to the person with the lowest standard deviation.

a. Explanation of the standard deviation: This basically measures how far, on average, all an individual’s scores are from his average score. E.g. Player A has scores of 10, 1, 10, 1. His average is 5.5. Player B has scores of 5, 6, 5, 6. His average is also 5.5. The standard deviation for Player A is 4.5, for Player B it is 0.5. In other words, Player B is a more consistent performer than A.

b. Rationale for Scoring System: The idea is to award the championship to the individual who performs at the highest level with the most consistency.

8. Minimum Number of Events: In order to qualify for  the Championship a player must play in at least 3 of the tournaments listed below during the season (running from Historicon to Historicon; mid-July to mid-July). If a player plays in more than 3 tournaments, the scores from his best 3 events will be used for scoring purposes. This is to encourage players to get out and play as much as possible. Always a good thing!

9. Minimum Number of Players: A tournament must have at least 6 players to qualify players for the championship standings.

St. Lawrence Seaway International Championship DBM Tournaments in the USA/Canada 2005-2006:

This year we will likely have 7 tournaments on the schedule. The names below are the individuals primarily responsible for organizing the event and handling the scoring. Please contact them directly if you have questions about the event. Announcements regarding these events will be posted to the NASAMW website and updated as needed. Results will also be posted there, and in Spearpoint. Results for last year can be found on the 2004-2005 NASAMW Results page. A number of write ups with pictures from various events are on my personal site.

Cross Border Challenge Syracuse, NY - 10/08  Jeff Zorn

MIGSCON - Hamilton, Ontario 10/15 David May

PointCon - West Point, NY - ?? Jeff Zorn

HotLead?

RedCon - Kingston, Ontario - ?? Jeff Zorn

Siege of Shrewsbury?

Syracon - Syracuse, NY - ?? Jeff Zorn

The two Kingston tournaments and Syracon are fairly centrally located, so it is likely that many players in this area will be able to make it to one, or all of these. Some players are going to be a bit more distant from some of these events than from others. There are a fair number of events scattered around Lake Ontario and another cluster around Connecticut. I hope we'll see some travel between regions (I know I'll try to make PointCon again). Probably a night’s stay over at one of these events will be necessary for many people at least once during the year.

Why have a league/championship? There are many ways to promote this hobby, one of these is through tournaments. By creating a formal championship series it is hoped that players will be encouraged to travel around this area a bit more, meet each other, and build up a sense of comradery and friendly competition. I know I became much better acquainted with our Canadian neighbors last year as a result of these events; they are a great bunch of guys. Many of them don't make it down to the big HMGS cons, or only sporadically so this is the best way to get in some games with them.. I hope as this series becomes established and better known it will draw in new players and inspire older hands to start new tournaments. In other words, more chances to push lead around the table top!

This is a great opportunity to build up our hobby in this area. I hope a lot of you feel the same way and will try to turn out for the minimum 3 events over the next year. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Good Gaming,

Standings after MIGSCON

Here are the  end of year standings after SyraCon.  Tony Zallnick's solid performance at Syracon, his 4th event of the year, allowed him to erase his less spectacular showing at PointCon, and leap past Zorn into first place. Tony also won 3 of the SLSIC events for the year. Congratulations to Tony! Most improved performance of the year has to go to Martin Rowland who went from 27th last year to 3rd this year. Well done! This year 27 players participated events in this circuit. Watch this space after Historicon for next year's schedule.
