Players interested in joining the 19-player group spanning from Delaware to Virginia should contact Tim Grimmett at grimmettancients@msn.com or call 703-922-8843

January 2008

Jan. 1 Winter Capital Quarterly Warrior Tournament

This is a call for players to participate in the next Capital Quarterly that will run from Jan-March, 2008

This is a 15mm event, one list.

Special Rules:
-Barbarian rules are in effect.
-Bodies entirely Reg B are eager.
-Armies with Army Standard and an option for a Sacred Standard may upgrade to the latter for free.
-360p deployment zone for 15mm
-SHC are 8 pts cheaper per element than listed.
-General character of 5 can be Bold or reroll on Special General’s table).
Special General Table
1 Bleeder. General has a physical defect that makes him more prone to a catastrophe. In Hand to Hand, if the Bleeder's unit takes 2 CPF or more, and makes a unmodified melee roll of -2, -3, or -4, forces a catastrophe. In preparatory shooting, if the Bleeder's unit is takes 2 CPF and the missile fire die roll is +2 or higher, forces a catastrophe.
2 Inattentive. General is sick or wounded. General gets only 10 prompt points a turn.
3 Efficient General gets 20 prompt points
4 Brave, Generals unit is always adds an additional +1 in melee. (So a down 3 roll for a Regular B General is even.)
5 Inspirational. Unit with general is never uneasy. If the General is the CIC then all units within 120 paces are never uneasy.
6 Great. General is Efficient, Brave, and Inspirational.

We welcome Tim Brown to our gaming group; Tim lives in northern Virginia. His contact information is on the Warrior POC list attached.

Please let me know by 30 November if you intend to play AND your Army choice: grimmettancients@msn.com or call 703-922-8843

Good luck to all,

Tim

The scoring will be 3-2-1-0 as per the Ghent tournament.

Time of Day and Weather will be played. Please note that all armies must be fully painted and based to a reasonable standard. Unpainted figures and bases without figures are not acceptable

Each team will comprise of 4 players, one playing in each period, the player for each period being nominated in advance and not being changed throughout the tournament. No team may have more than one player fielding the same army (possible when it crosses the date periods) i.e. book and list number must not be the same:
Period 1 Player - 3000BC to 501BC
Period 2 Player - 500BC to 475AD
Period 3 Player - 476AD to 1070AD
Period 4 Player - 1071AD to 1500AD

Lists must clearly indicate:
Name and contact details of the player.
Team and period (1-4)
Army name, book, number.
Date.
General, geographical or other option selected if appropriate
Climate and aggression (since in some cases options exist)
List and total of elements allocated by command.
Cost by element type.
Elements, element equivalents and break points per command.
Elements, element equivalents and break point for the army.
If baggage is mobile or static.
All double based elements. (which must be double based for the tournament, and may not be changed game by game)

List Errors or Changes
Once an army list has been submitted it may not be changed or altered other than to correct any errors. Players may only correct their  errors by making reasonable changes to their list. It is not allowed to completely re-write the list, and the list checkers decision on this is final.

Additional notes on lists
For foreign allies taken from another list the * minimums are normally not compulsory and so not allowed. The exception to this is if another option which has been selected e.g. general, time period, specific troop type etc. triggers such a minimum and makes it compulsory; For any elements with other special characteristics those selected must be clearly marked on the list e.g. Hittite can have 6 Bedouin elements; When writing army lists please list all troop types in the same order as they are listed in the DBM Army List Books; Include descriptions from the lists, e.g. Book 1, List 24 "Hittite Empire" - "Syrian vassal spearmen". In this list it is particularly important since there are many types of Ps(I) with maximums and minimums; If the description in YOUR submitted list does not specify "Bedouin" or other special characteristics and there are a number of options, they will be considered to be the type without any special abilities. For example, in the list mentioned above, "Shaasu or Sutu Bedouin", I will assume "Shaasu", not "Sutu Bedouin" if you do not specify the type; If any troop type has been upgraded or downgraded and the list description has changed, please include in your army list the original description. This is especially important for armies such as the Hittites mentioned above, where any of the "Syrian Spearmen" or "Syrian Archers" can be downgraded to Hd(O). To further complicate this particular example, both the Spearmen and the Bowmen each have minimums and this must be complied with for the army as a whole and within each ally. Considerable time can be wasted checking all possible permutations to find one which works.

4 Rounds, 3:45 hour per game, dice down. Players are encouraged to play 12 Bounds. There will be 1 minute blitz for less than 12 bounds.

Sat. Jan. 19, 2007
Round 1 9:00 am-12:45 pm
Round 2 1:30-5:45 pm
Round 3 6:30 pm - 10:15 pm

Sunday Jan. 20, 2007
Round 4 9:00 am-12:45 pm

Each team will nominate 1 player as captain/ umpire. Rules questions during a match will be asked by a referee of a team not in the match. Players are encouraged to settle disputes among themselves. (I suggest dueling sabres, those dueling scars look neat)

Umpires
The Umpires will adjudicate in accordance with the written letter of the rules, unless otherwise specified by an official clarification released by the DBM authors, or, in conjunction with the IWF clarifications. However umpires have final adjudication on any issues with ambiguities or requiring interpretation.

Players must not expect umpires to rule on matters of measurement, or to make rulings if elements have been moved, without marking. It is the responsibility of the moving player to resolve such issues before moving elements. The benefit of any doubt will be given to the non-moving player.

If you are about to move an element where it is difficult to measure distances or the move may prove to be controversial, it is good practice to mark the position before moving. The benefit of any doubt will be given to the static player.

Players are to accept the umpire's decision with good grace. Any player who exhibits offensive, aggressive, abusive, disruptive or inappropriate behavior to the umpire or fellow players may be subject to having their game forfeited or, in severe cases, be ejected from the competition.

Deployment Orders and Maps
Each player must prepare deployment orders, and may need to do a deployment map if ambushing or flank marching; Deployment orders must indicate the relative positions of all on table commands, and must be passed to the opponent at the end of the deployment phase. It need not be a map, but could be a simple indication on the army list sheet, as long as the game/round is clearly noted. Commands do not need to be positioned relative to terrain, and could be just noted "Left, Centre Left, Centre Right, and Right".
A deployment map must show ambushes and flank marches, with exact positions and facing clearly marked. It must be shown to the opponent at the end of the game. It need not be provided if no flank march or ambushes have been made. Some players have used commands deployed in front of or behind two or more other commands. Such devices have been used to provide excessive flexibility in deployment. The most extreme example of course would be to deploy 4 commands one behind the other, then for the player to place each wherever he wanted left to right over the 1.8m table width, as deployment developed. These are also known as "floating commands", and the most extreme example would be:

Command 1
Command 2
Command 3
Command 4

Clearly this is excessive, and does not define "the relative position of their commands from right to left and front to rear". Accordingly for "floating commands" deployed in front of or behind more than one other command either:
The other commands must be deployed sufficiently narrowly so that the floating command only has restricted frontage and cannot abuse the flexibility. This is subjective, and will be interpreted reasonably on a case by case basis. As guidance, if the total frontage of the other commands exceeds 30cm or has large gaps between elements it may be considered excessive. The player must specify which elements are in front/behind each of the other commands; The command must be reasonably evenly distributed in front of or behind all commands; In case of doubt or potential abuse please call the umpire as soon as deployment orders have been exchanged.

NOTE: It must be possible to unambiguously reconcile the command identifiers used on the deployment orders and those used on the pre submitted army list e.g. if the list shows commands labeled 1 - 4, the map labels must correspond. However, these identifiers do not necessarily need to be consecutive. Otherwise when deployment orders are passed over if commands 1, 2 and 4 are shown, it might be obvious that command 3 exists and is flank marching. Clearly this would only otherwise be visible after the player throws his first PIP dice.

Game duration and Last Bounds
Games will have a duration of 3 hours 45 minutes. In addition a period of BLITZ may be included to ensure a minimum of 12 bounds have been completed in each game, unless of course on or more army broke earlier. If at the end of the game, 12 turns have not been completed a period of Blitz will occur.

Blitz Rules
Overview
At the normal game end after last bound has been called, if 12 pairs of bounds have not been played, a Blitz period is entered. During Blitz all PIP based moves have to be carried out in 1 minute Blitz period.

Detail
Players record the number of pairs of bounds on a shared record (which may be supplied).
When "last bound" is called, the game is played to the end of the defender's bound (i.e. as previously). If at that stage 12 pairs of  bounds have not been played and neither army is demoralised, a Blitz period is entered. The Blitz will be supervised by an umpire or a nominee appointed by an umpire (both referred to below as the "umpire"). The umpire will time the 1 minute for the first (invader's) bound. PIP dice are thrown after the umpire starts the time. PIP dice allocation and all moves must be completed in the 1 minute Blitz period. Any PIPs unspent at the end of 1 minute are wasted. No-one may interrupt or distract the player making moves during their 1 minute blitz period. Specifically the opponent must not start a debate or question moves apart from identifying moves for later referral to the umpire (i.e. checking legality.). An opponent who wishes to challenge any blitz moves should mark those they wish to challenge as they are made with a suitable counter or other marker. The moving player may request explanation of the challenge at his sole discretion. If requested the response should be phrased reasonably succinctly. Alternatively the moving player may carry on
and leave any challenges to be clarified after the time limit. Note: This allows a moving player to get explanation of the challenges on any "crucial" moves and still have time to correct them within his time limit, if he wishes to. The moving player may choose at his option to make his own compulsory/impetuous moves within the time limit in any order he desires as per normal Pursuit moves of enemy troops arising from break offs are done in the Blitz period.
Flank marches - if arriving during a Blitz bound, the following is done before the Blitz period starts: the die for the flank marching command is rolled on its own, then the figures arriving are placed at their place of arrival and any flee moves resulting from the flank march arrival are carried out. The Blitz period is then started during which the arriving troops are moved on table. If flank marchers arriving in a subsequent bound cause enemy to flee, the umpire will pause the Blitz time for the flee move(s) to be carried out by the umpire.
After the end of the 1 minute blitz period:
Any illegal moves are taken back as determined by the umpire. The non-moving player can challenge the legality of moves, but the final determination is the umpire's. Any impetuous or flee moves are made by the umpire. These will be made in the simplest order, which will normally be those closest to enemy elements first (no back ranks charging through to swap the element fighting etc.). All other things being equal he will normally start on one side and work along.
All shooting and combats are carried out as usual.
If, at the end of the relevant bound, an army is broken the game stops.
The process is then repeated for the defender's bound until 12 pairs of bounds have been played at which point the Blitz period is over and the game is scored as usual.

Further Rules
If the bound count is forgotten then the players should agree the number of bounds played or, if agreement cannot be reached, it is assumed that the number of bounds displayed is correct. An umpire is not in a position to resolve such a disagreement.  The moving player may take a reasonable amount of time before PIPs are thrown to agree intricate measurements with his opponent or the umpire. The moving player can ask the umpire present about the legality of a move during their 1 minute, but this is included in their blitz time. The clock is not stopped for this.  The umpire can stop (and if appropriate re-start) the 1 minute time for any reason they see fit. Blitz need not be played or once started can be stopped at any time if both players agree to that.  The organizers may require a game to be completed before finishing 12 bounds and shall have complete discretion in doing so.

Premature Blitz
The recording of bounds played should highlight at an early stage whether a reasonable speed of play is being achieved. Should an umpire determine that a match is progressing too slow to achieve the minimum 12 bounds per players within the normal game duration, Blitz may be imposed prior to calling "last bound". This ruling will be applied only in extreme cases of perceived "slow play".

Player's notes
12 bounds of play should not be seen as a target number of bounds. It is a minimum expectation. Players are requested to bear in mind that the Blitz period is not budgeted for in the competition schedule. As such, players are requested to get through the Blitz as quickly as possible. The recording of the number of bounds played should highlight at an early stage whether a reasonable speed of play is being achieved. If this appears to be a problem and cannot be resolved between the players an umpire should be called.

For the past several years, the Siege has been the convention to go to for DBA-related games. Sunday AM (9 AM-1PM) 25mm HOTT Open or Big Battle HOTT Demo
(GM: Martin Schmidt)

Depending on the number of participants (and their preferences) we will have either a tournament of will divide up into two sides and battle "Good" vs "Evil" (depending on your point of view.) Players should bring 24AP (army points) of fantasy or historical troops based for the DBx '25mm' scale (60mm frontage). Temporary basing is ok if you want to 'blue-tack' Warhammer figures to DBx bases please feel free to do so. Historical armies can be easily converted in this system! A Sub Roman British can become a fantasy Knights of the Round Table force. You just designate the command stand with 'Arthur' as a hero, another stand of knights can include Lancelot as a Paladin and if you want more fantasy add a Druidic figure for Merlin the Magician! Retired 'clix' game figures figures work great for quickly basing up armies! Use your imagination, the possibilities are endless! Loaner forces will be available for those without troops but I'd love to see what other people can come up with as well!

Alexander the Great's first battle against the Persians was a "near-run" thing, in fact, he almost died! We will be probably use a system where each command equals a DBA army, however, I may try to learn/use the brand-new Field of Glory system. The Persians defend a river; can they use that advantage and their excellent Greek mercenary spear to offset Alexander's command and troop quality advantages?

Friday:

Noon-11pm
Mini Theme Campaign, 1200 pt army, 15mm & 25mm, 2.5 hour rounds
Round 1: Noon, Round 2: 4pm, Round 3: 8pm.
All Biblical Warrior lists allowed with restrictions posted at www.nasamw.org.
Special Rules: Campaign rules and army composition guidelines are posted at www.nasamw.org and www.fourhorsemenenterprises.com/forum.

1) Each player buys a regular 1600 point army (one version) that must follow the usual min/max guidelines. However, whatever a player chooses to field in any given round does NOT have to consist of those min/max bodies. What a player fields in each round cannot exceed 1200 points (plus the cost of your cheapest single element cost). Basically, you enter the campaign with 400 points of troops in reserve and how you manage losses and replacements during rounds 2-3 are entirely up to you. but only fields 1200 points in each round.

2) Troops broken/destroyed at the end of each round are gone and do not return in subsequent rounds.

3) Shaken troops come back at HALF strength in elements OR one morale grade lower than that which they started the round. If a general was in a 2 element unit, that means said general comes back as a single element body. If the general was only in a single element body at the start of the round and ends shaken, the general comes back one morale grade
lower. Such reductions carry over into subsequent rounds, ie, there is no regaining of elements or morale grades. Also, there is a bottom limit to morale grade reductions. Regulars can go no lower than D class, Irregulars no lower than E. Should a unit theoretically drop below that, then your only option is to lose half the elements.

4) If your shaken unit is regular, you'll obviously need to factor in such unit limitations as even number of ranks, etc., when bringing back that unit. You could also choose to merge the unit into another but any command points "freed up" by such a move are essentially wasted unless you need to reorganize units later on. Basically, you can't purchase additional troops. Or you could choose to leave that unit in reserve in anticipation of melding it with another unit after the next round (all
list restrictions on mixing units still apply, however). These same issues apply to irregular units as well.

5) After each round, you will need to rewicker your list since point values for units could change (as you merge them or bring them back at half strength or reduced morale), command costs might be subtracted or added.

6) What about armies that just lose too much stuff? Well usually the scoring system used in WARRIOR tracks what was lost in terms of troop values. So by Swiss pairing, I anticipate that tourney scores will result in armies that are more or less the same size as their opponent when plalying. And if not, so be it, that's the "charm" of a campaign tournament. You will really need to manage your forces over at least 2 rounds if you want to survice into round 3. Therefore, this might not be
a full three round tournament for some players. To continue into the next round, a player will need about 700 points left. If you fall below that and there isn't another player reasonably close (the umpire will make this determination but assumre around 100-150 points difference), then we'll perhaps use FW lists. Just be prepared to be flexible in the third round. I remember playing Ed Berhart in Round 3 and we each had maybe 600 points. We drank a lot that game.

7) Have more than one general. If your CinC gets killed, you'll need a second in command. His point value as second in command won't "go up" should he get promoted, just stick with his value as originally purchased (unless he's down a morale grade from being shaken in previous rounds, then you'd subtract that cost from the body).

Be prepared for a looser than usual tournament. Be prepared to be flexible between each round as we collectively struggle to get army lists reworked for the next round. Be prepared to have fun and test your generalship in a much more realistic way than other tournaments.

Army lists (special rules and restrictions are TENTATIVE. Also, the Barbarian Playtest Rules will be used and very possibly 1-2 X Rules and who knows, maybe one or two things tried out at Fall In 07. We will do everything we can to not turn this into the Midiante and Neo-Bablylonian Tournament).

they can but the Ally's element ignores any resulting actions of failed

take a waver test at -1 regardless of where they are on the battlefield.
This -1 is in addition to any other minuses that might occur along with
the associated waver test(s). ALL other units take a regular waver test

bulletApr. 4-5 Little Wars (IL) FoG tournament: Lincolnshire, IL

The following are the field of Glory events being offered by the ChicagoFoG gaming group at the HMGS Midwest Little Wars convention in Lincolnshire, Illinois, on the weekend of April 4th-5th, 2008

Demonstration Sessions

Friday, April 4: 2:00pm - 6:00pm, 6:30pm - 10:30pm

Learn the new Field of Glory miniatures rules for ancient and medieval warfare by taking sides in a classical pitched battle as Alexander tries to add India to his list of conquests or by riding with the Condottieri as 15th century Italian city-states vie for supremacy.

Unlike past rules for ancient and medieval warfare, Field of Glory has been designed to reward historical deployments and battlefield tactics without all of the tortured syntax and extraneous minutia that plagued earlier rule sets.

No prior knowledge of the system is required and all are welcome to participate.

Field of Glory Tournament

Saturday, April 5: 9:00am - 11:00pm

Three rounds of ancient and medieval combat using the new Field of Glory rules system. The event will be in 15mm, and figure basing is the same as used in most other ancient/medieval rule sets, so you can most likely use your favorite army from another set of rules. Armies must be composed from the published army list books (Rise of Rome and Storm of Arrows) and must be bought with no more than 800 points.

Players should be familiar with Field of Glory, so if you haven't played before please sign up for one of the demonstration sessions on Friday night. Players who are familiar with the system, but need help preparing their order of battle or have any questions are also encouraged to stop by the Friday night demonstrations.

Rounds will start at 9:00, 2:00 & 7:00.

bulletHistoricon, Lancaster, PA
Field of Glory tournament details:
NASAMW will run three tournaments using the Field of Glory (FoG) rules at Historicon. All three events will be run in 15mm. They will also be run in 25mm with the following caveat: if not enough players sign up for a particular event to allow a viable tournament the organizers reserve the right to cancel that event. 25mm events will be played on an 8x5 table using 40mm for a movement unit. All players, in both scales, are encouraged to contact Marc Crotteau at juvenileshark@yahoo.com in advance of Historicon to say which scale they are likely to play. This will help immensely with allocating available table space.
There will be prizes based on tournament results and for best presented army.
